Frequently Asked Questions About General College

What is the difference between General College and a community college?

The mission of the General College is quite different. GC does not offer two-year (associate) degrees, nor does it offer occupational training programs. Instead, the college prepares students for entry into bachelor's degree-granting programs at the University. The percentage of General College students who successfully transfer into University degree programs is high-twice the percentage of successful transfers from community colleges. Most importantly, GC is an integral part of the University of Minnesota. As a GC student, you are a University of Minnesota student, with full access to all of the rich resources of this great university.

Does it take longer to get a bachelor's degree if I start in General College?
No! It is possible for you to begin your college education in General College and earn your University of Minnesota degree in four years. If we admit you, we believe that you have the potential to succeed. Your progress toward your degree will depend on your own level of academic preparedness, the care with which you plan and carry out your goals and objectives, and the amount of effort and commitment you put into obtaining your educational goals. We'll do whatever we can to help you stay on track.

When will I transfer to another U of M college?
You may transfer to another U of M college when you meet the requirements for transfer to that college. (These requirements vary from college to college.) Most students will be in GC for three semesters. During the first year, students take all GC courses. In their third semester, students will take a combination of GC and non GC courses and will apply for transfer into another U of M college. The retention and transfer rates for new students entering GC are excellent; for students who entered the college in 1997, the second-year retention rate was 77.3 percent, comparing favorably with other freshman-admitting colleges. Students starting in GC and transferring into the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) graduate as quickly as students who initially start in CLA.

Do credits from General College transfer into and count toward degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts or other colleges within the University of Minnesota?
Virtually all GC coursework is offered for full University credit and will count as required (Liberal Education and/or major requirements) or elective credits toward degrees offered by other colleges of the University. Only four preparation math courses-offered for all University students who have not met preparation requirements in mathematics-do not grant college credit. Early planning and wise academic course selection will maximize the number of credits that will transfer to the college of your choice, fulfill U of M liberal education requirements, and also will apply to the major/degree program of your choice. Your academic adviser in GC will assist you in your course planning.
