Frequently Asked Questions About General College

What is General College?
General College (GC), one of eight University of Minnesota- Twin Cities colleges that admit freshmen, provides access to the University of Minnesota for students who are highly motivated to pursue a college education at a major research institution but do not meet the admission requirements of the other freshman-admitting colleges.

General College has a distinguished history of offering a University of Minnesota education to students who have the desire and ability to succeed in college. Many U of M graduates who began their college education in GC have become leaders in such fields as business, law and government, education, the arts, communication, and health care.

GC "opens the U for you," offering programs designed to give you a strong start in college and prepare you for transfer into one of the University's other colleges. The single most important mission of General College is to help you achieve your academic goals and be a successful U of M student. The challenging college level coursework and supportive environment offered in GC permits you to complete the academic preparation and skills development you need to be successful at the University of Minnesota.

Why should I choose General College?
Research shows that students who have a positive first-year experience are more likely to stay in college, be successful, and graduate. General College is dedicated to providing a full range of services to support your academic, personal, and cultural development during the important early stages of your college education.

  • Curriculum - Successful completion of General College courses will prepare you well for successful performance after transfer into other U of M colleges. The General College curriculum has been carefully planned to introduce you to major academic content areas (sciences, humanities, and social sciences) and to enhance your skills in English composition and mathematics.
  • Teaching and advising - General College classes are generally small and interactive. Both in and outside of the classroom, you will receive a high degree of individual attention and personalized advising. Members of the faculty not only are experts in their fields but are committed, highly skilled, and successful teachers. In their classrooms and laboratories, GC professors use teaching strategies that research and practice have shown are appropriate and effective for college freshmen.
  • Resources and Programs - GC offers many resources and programs that help students in a variety of ways.
