Short
Term Adolescent Rehabilitative Services (STARS) incorporates several
theories into a comprehensive rehabilitative treatment program.
It is family-focused, solution-based treatment. The purpose of
STARS is to improve or maintain the youth’s emotional or
behavioral functioning and to reduce the risk of out-of-home and
out-of-school placement.
The program
STARS provides programming year-round throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
Programming takes place in the child’s community, as part of
school programming or as an after-school activity. Youth attend once
per week for 2-3 hours over a period of five to seven months. The
groups will employ various theories and be experientially based.
Groups are designed to assist the youth in identifying their strengths,
changing irrational thinking, taking responsibility for their self-destructive
behaviors, and building skills to affect change.
STARS has family skills training groups designed to assist parents
develop the parenting skills necessary to address the needs of their
child and assist in leisure and recreational activities.
The STARS community program works and communicates with all parties
involved in the treatment of the youth to coordinate treatment. STARS
will not interfere with current mental health services.
Eligibility
In order to participate, clients must be 13 to 17 years old, be on
medical assistance (MA), and have an emotional disturbance, based on a recently completed assessment. A referral source
can be a parent, school staff, therapist, case worker, mental health
case manager, or probation officer. A simple phone call with the
child’s name, MA number or Minnesota Care insurance number, and SED diagnosis can start the process
to see if the STARS program can meet his or her needs.
For more information on the admission process, call the STARS program
director at (612) 627-4107.
